The Four Major Rules.
  1. The rug should be in good condition (neither worn out, nor shabby). A well-restored rug is acceptable.

  2. The purpose intended for your rugs not to be neglected. A rug the destination of which is the dining room or the entrance hall will favour strength and solidity. Aesthetics (iconography) or refinement will be of lesser importance in this particular case where special attention will be granted to the wool quality of its tufts. The layman may be at a loss to determine the appropriate material to be privileged. However, if the role imparted to your carpet resorts essentially to decoration or collection, weaving and aesthetic considerations will be of prime importance.

  3. A rug at least 30 years of age is in itself a warrant of good workmanship. Modern carpet industry appeared somewhat later (in Iran -i.e. former Persia - the change occurred before and after the Revolution).

  4. Some modern carpets are still most carefully manufactured (excellent wool quality, natural dyes) but here again the expertise of the specialist will help him in his choice.
